What are dermal fillers—and what can they actually do?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore selected volume and support. Most treatments at Dr Kay Clinic use temporary hyaluronic-acid filler and are planned around facial structure, movement and proportion.

Filler has limits. It cannot tighten significantly loose skin, replace surgery or correct every line and shadow. A consultation can correctly end with a recommendation not to have filler.

Assessment before treatment

The visible line is not always the real cause

An under-eye shadow may come from pigment or fluid rather than a hollow. A deeper smile line may reflect loss of support higher in the cheek. Adding filler to the most obvious area is not always the right answer.

  • Structure and proportion: the whole face is considered before one area is treated.
  • Movement and skin quality: filler is not used for a concern better suited to another approach.
  • Previous treatment: unknown or existing filler is considered before anything new is added.

A good consultation is a clinical decision. It may recommend a smaller change, a different treatment or no filler.

Where clinically appropriate, Dr Kay uses high-frequency ultrasound to look beneath the skin before deciding how to proceed. It can add information that examination by sight and touch alone cannot provide.

Can dermal filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic-acid filler can often be reduced with hyaluronidase, but dissolving is another medical procedure—not an instant or risk-free reset. It does not dissolve every filler material, the response can be difficult to predict and more than one session may be needed.

The questions people most often ask before arranging an assessment.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels used to restore selected volume, support and proportion. Dr Kay Clinic mainly uses temporary hyaluronic-acid filler. The appropriate area and amount depend on your anatomy and the cause of the concern.

How do I know which treatment area I need?

You do not need to diagnose it yourself. A visible fold or shadow may be caused by volume loss elsewhere, muscle movement, skin laxity, pigment or fluid. The consultation identifies the cause before recommending filler or an alternative.

Does Dr Kay use ultrasound for dermal fillers?

Yes, high-frequency ultrasound is available when it can add useful clinical information. It may help visualise relevant anatomy, locate previous filler or guide a selected procedure. It supports clinical judgement but does not remove every risk and is not required for every treatment.

Will dermal fillers look natural?

Natural-looking change is the aim, but no outcome can be guaranteed. A conservative plan considers the whole face and uses the smallest appropriate change rather than treating every line or adding unnecessary volume.

How long do hyaluronic-acid fillers last?

A broad guide is often six to eighteen months, but duration varies with the treatment area, product, amount, facial movement and individual metabolism. The likely range is discussed for your specific plan.

Can Dr Kay assess or dissolve filler placed at another clinic?

Yes, previous filler concerns can be assessed. Hyaluronidase can reduce hyaluronic-acid filler, but it does not dissolve every material and carries risks of its own. Bring any product details, dates, quantities, records and photographs available.
